For the beginner or the advanced climber private instruction with a professional guide is the fastest way to safely meet your climbing goals.  Joshua Tree and Idylwild are filled with a wide range of beautiful classic climbs for any level of experience. Our AMGA certified guides will create a program to meet your needs.  Private guides are available for individuals or small groups up to five people.

Group Rock Climbing - 1 Day

Being out on the rocks and climbing with your group of friends is rewarding both mentally and physically. Along with the positive energy of your group Uprising's guides create a supportive environment allows you to 'open' yourself to rock climbing. Opening is 'being in the moment,' and this is part of what happens when you're moving on the rock. Your main support is found in the focus and initiative of the present task at hand; deciding where to move next and breathing into the current situation. Additional support lie's within belayer (person who holds the rope), by asking for what you need the teamwork created supports all the group members. Be fond of climbing and it will be fond of you...and bring the kids!

Depending upon the participant's familiarity, Uprising will adjust the following:

  • Climbing and Movement on rock: Breathing, foot work, shoe position, weight shifts, balance, energy conservation, positive attitude and reading the rock
  • Knots: The figure 8 series and the clove hitch
  • Belaying: Hand and body position, types of devices
  • Signals: Communicating with your climbing partner using calls and responses
  • Rappelling: Descending the cliff by lowering yourself down a fixed rope (optional)
  • Equipment introduction: ropes, slings, carabiners, anchor building tools (optiona)

Prerequisite: Average physical condition
Minimum group size: 6

Guide-to-client ratio: 1:5 - At least 2 guides working each Group Program.
Cost: $75 per person
2008 Dates: Reservations are taken over the phone and require half the course tuition.

Boy/Girl Scout & Youth Programs - 1 Day          Book this course

Uprising Adventure guides are also certified Merit Badge Counselors for Boys and Girls scout merit badges and electives. Bring your troop out for a day of learning and adventure! Reservations and tour permits are required for all programs.

Prerequisite: Average physical condition and interest in climbing
Guide-to-client ratio: 1:4 maximum for merit badge programs, 1:5 for climbing only

Cost: $80 per person recreational /$90 with merit badge

Rock 101 - 1 Day - Beginner
This course is essential for a solid foundation and will be the basis for your future climbing experiences. This introduction to climbing is presented in a "how-to" format emphasizing the following:

Climbing and Movement on rock: Concepts: Breathing, foot work, shoe position, weight shifts, balance, energy conservation, positive attitude and reading the rock.

  • Knots: The figure 8 series and the clove hitch
  • Rope handling: Butterfly coil and stacking
  • Belaying: Hand and body position, types of devices
  • Signals: Communicating with your climbing partner using calls and responses
  • Rappelling: Descending the cliff and how to stop with your hands free
  • Equipment introduction: ropes, slings, carabiners, anchor building tools

    Prerequisite: Average physical condition

    Cost: $120, approximately 8 hours

  • Rock 102 - 1 Day - Beginner
    Rock 102 takes the basics from our Rock 101 course to the next level.

  • After reviewing the fundamentals and warming up on top rope climbs you will be taught the     nuances of moving on challenging terrain
  • Specific techniques of moving on rock such as; balance, breathing, creativity and efficiency will     be taught to ensure your growth as a climber
  • Topping things off Uprising introduces you to anchor building and more rappelling details     necessary for self-rescue
  • Course includes all necessary equipment and belay certification at Uprising Outdoor Adventure     Center

    Cost: $120, approximately 8 hours

  • Rock 202 - 2 Days - Intermediate
    This course provides the key step to climbing on your own. Uprising mixes anchor building with moving on rock. By fully understanding your equipment, its limits, and the rock-quality for protection, you will develop solid techniques enabling you to provide your own top-roping experiences. You will reinforce your judgment skills by practicing anchor building until you can build an anchor that will hold under any climbing circumstance! Uprising Adventure Guides will provide you the opportunity and the careful attention you need to advance to a more competent level of technical expertise.

    • Day 1
      • Detailed history/function/strength of the modern top of the line equipment
      • Knots: fisherman's, Bowline, double and triple overhand, water knot
      • Protection placement: Done as a class in participatory style
      • Strong and simple anchors: Practice linking protection finishing with a simple "master point"
      • Climbing: Breathing and Balance techniques, reading the rock and energy conservation
    • Day 2
      • Participant built anchors: Clients have the opportunity place more protection and build their own top rope anchors
      • Rappelling: Clients set up and descend from their own anchors (Optional)
      • More Climbing: Breathing and Balance techniques, reading the rock and energy conservation

    Prerequisite: Rock 101 Course or equivalent skill level

    Cost: $225

    Multi-Pitch Climbing - 2 Days - Advanced
    This course leads you into new areas of expertise, teaching skills essential to multi-pitched climbing hundreds of feet off the ground.

    • Following a lead climb: This involves cleaning the protection placed by your guide
    • Multi-pitch climbing: Climbing routes two or more pitches in length
    • Multi-directional anchors: Used during multi-pitch belays
    • Advanced rappelling: Terrain evaluation, carabiner brake system, third-hand back-up, rope retrieval systems and hazard management
    • Fixed line ascension: Ascending with improvised friction knots. This skill is valuable for any rescue, rappelling, or aid climbing situation
    • Belay escape: Tying off a fallen climber and escaping the belay for a rescue

    Prerequisite: Multi-Pitch Climbing Course or equivalent skill level
    Guide-to-client ratio: min=1:3/max=1:4
    Cost: $225

    Lead Climbing- 2 Days - Advanced
    Learning how to lead is the next step toward experiencing all the challenge and exhilaration of climbing. Uprising Adventure Guides will help you obtain your lead-climbing goals, whether to climb a 2000 foot cliff or just a 100 foot rock wall. All mock leading is done on top rope, allowing you to focus on technique and gear placement.

    Climbing and Movement on rock: Concepts: Breathing, foot work, shoe position, weight shifts, balance, energy conservation, positive attitude and reading the rock

    • Demonstration and explanation of lead climbing
    • Choosing an appropriate climb
    • Choosing and organizing your equipment
    • Protecting a lead
    • Psychological factors, fears
    • Physics of lead climbing and falling
    • Belay management, catching a fall
    • Leading on your own time, suggestions and recommendations

    Prerequisite: Multi-Pitch Climbing Course or equivalent skill level
    Guide-to-client ratio: min=1:3/max=1:4
    Cost: $225

    Aid Climbing - 1 Day - Advanced
  • Leading an Aid pitch: Protection placed without a hammer, protection placed with a hammer
  • Organizing Belays
  • Gear hauling for overnights on the rock
  • Following an Aid pitch: Cleaning "hammered and clean" protection
  • Prerequisite: Lead Climbing Course or equivalent skill level
    Guide-to-client ratio: min=1:3/max=1:4
